Carbon Trust Certificate

As a result of the continuous programme of works in Energy usage and greenhouse gas (CO2e) emissions; Water usage, management and effluent and Waste management and disposal, Tirlán Ingredients became the first dairy processing company to be awarded the triple certification in recognition for best-practice and real achievements in reduction in Carbon Emissions, Water and Waste in 2014.


Sustainable Agriculture

Tirlán Ingredients also recently became members of the Roundtable for Sustainable Palm Oil, the Sustainable Agriculture Initiative and the Dairy Sustainability Framework.


Sustainable Energy Awards

Tirlán Ingredients has been accredited to ISO 14001 since 2000. Using the environmental management system as a basis Tirlán Ingredients was the first Irish owned company to be accredited with an Energy management system in 2006 which is now certified to ISO5001.

In November 2014 Tirlán Ingredients were runners up in two categories Industry and Ambition for the SEAI Sustainable Energy Awards. The Industry award challenges entrants to promote themselves as going beyond best practice in energy demand reduction within industry or the large business sector. Key elements of the 2014 entry included the well-established Tirlán Ingredients energy management system and it’s inter-relationship with our Manufacturing Execution System (MES) and the Glanbia Performance System (GPS). Tirlán Ingredients has monitored energy consumption for over 30 years.


International Responsible Business Awards

In September 2014 Tirlán Ingredients and Diageo won first prize in the Business to Business category at the Ethical Corporations International Responsible Business awards in London.

Tirlán Ingredients and Diageo work together to create the world famous Baileys Cream Liqueur. Since 1974, Tirlán Ingredients has been the exclusive supplier of cream to Diageo. Cream is the key ingredient in the production of the world famous Baileys Irish Cream Liqueur.

Tirlán Ingredients developed a benchmark sustainability programme not just for cream, but for our entire process chain from cow to customer which was published in 2014 and called the Open Source Sustainability and Quality Assurance Code.


As part of the Sustainable Cream Initiative, Diageo and Tirlán Ingredients are working together to:

  • Develop our Open Source® on- farm continuous improvement programme
  • Create ‘best practice guidance’ material
  • Deliver a winter milk bonus price
  • Measure the on-farm carbon footprint
  • Reduce the environmental footprint

In recognition of Tirlán Ingredients’ and Diageo’s partnership on this initiative , they were recently awarded the ‘Best Business to Business Partnership’ award at the annual Responsible Business Awards in London.

To date more than 1000 farms have been audited. The carbon footprint for milk has been defined for the Irish dairy industry.
